Education & Training

The University of Chicago Department of Neurological Surgery trains the next generation of neurosurgeons through a fully ACGME-accredited residency, two subspecialty fellowships, and continuing medical education for practicing physicians. We also welcome visiting medical students from across the country into our subinternship program.

Our Programs

Each program is led by full-time UChicago neurosurgical faculty and integrates clinical experience at UChicago Medicine with research opportunities across the Biological Sciences Division.

Residency
Neurological Surgery Residency
A seven-year ACGME-accredited residency program training the next generation of academic neurosurgeons. Residents rotate through the full breadth of adult and pediatric neurosurgical subspecialties — vascular, oncology, spine, functional, trauma, and pediatrics — with protected research time in a top-tier biomedical research environment.

Fellowship
Neurosurgical Trauma Fellowship
A one-year fellowship at one of the busiest Level 1 adult trauma centers on the South Side of Chicago. Fellows develop advanced expertise in the management of penetrating and blunt traumatic brain injury, complex spinal trauma, and cerebrovascular emergencies, with high operative volume and multidisciplinary critical care exposure.

Stereotactic & Functional Neurosurgery Fellowship
A one- to two-year fellowship in deep brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery, intraoperative neurophysiology, and pain neuromodulation. Fellows train alongside our functional neurosurgery, epilepsy, and movement disorders teams, with dedicated operative experience and a structured research curriculum.

Visiting Students
Subinternship opportunities for fourth-year medical students from accredited U.S. and international institutions interested in pursuing a residency in neurological surgery. Visiting rotators are integrated directly into the resident team and gain hands-on operative and clinical exposure.

UChicago Medicine offers an active calendar of accredited CME activities — including grand rounds, online modules, and live conferences — across neurosurgery, neurology, and the broader biological sciences. CME activities are coordinated through the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Center for Continuing Medical Education.
